I am a Director of Education (PGT) at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University. Newcastle Business School has double-accreditation for Business and Accounting from AACSB, is within the Top 50 Universities in the UK and within the Top 500 worldwide. Newcastle Business School has a particular strength in public administration, leadership and management teaching and research.
I am a successful supervisor and examiner of PhD’s and welcome proposals for PhD research in areas aligned to my research interests. I have significant experience in programme development, delivery and examination at postgraduate and doctoral levels in public administration including MPA’s and DPA’s. Much of my prior teaching experience has included engaging with employers, such as Academi Wales, City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee City Council, Orkney Islands Council and Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations, in the design and delivery of professionally-relevant postgraduate programmes. I have been external examiner at Staffordshire University, Plymouth University and Teeside University.
My research includes work on public leadership, organisational change in the public sector and community empowerment. I have published in a wide variety of peer-reviewed academic journals and edited academic books. I have extensive consultancy and research experience and have successfully supervised five doctoral students to completion. I am subject expert for Public Services and Healthcare in the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) Scientific Committee for the Journal Quality Guide. I am also Chair of the PAC, Vice Chair of the Joint University Council for Applied Social Sciences, and sit on the Advisory Board of Teaching Public Administration and Public Policy and Administration.
I have been commissioned by a number of organisations to run training courses and have been invited to speak at numerous academic and professional events including for Higher Education Academy, MacKay Hannah and Holyrood Events. My research has been published in trade and popular press including The Conversation, Scottish Policy Now, Public Sector Executive and The Scotsman.
